Agtech startup Rize aims to lower rice farming's methane emissions in southeast Asia. The Singapore-based startup recently raised $14 million in Series A funding from investors. A 10th of the world's methane emissions comes from rice farming, as bacteria break down in wet rice paddies and release the gas. To reduce rice's methane footprint, agtech startup Rize is working with small rice farmers in Vietnam and Indonesia — locals who manage a farm about the size of one and a half soccer fields. Rize's on-the-ground scientists use the startup's tech platform and green growing techniques to help these farmers grow rice more sustainably and increase their harvest.

More than 100 million people are voting on Wednesday in one of the biggest elections in the world. The contest for the top prize — the presidency of Indonesia — is a three-way race. But looming large is someone not on the ballot. That person is Joko Widodo, the incumbent president, who is not allowed to seek a third five-year term and will step down in October. A decade after Mr. Joko presented himself as a down-to-earth reformer and won office, he remains incredibly popular.

In a sea of income-generating exchange-traded funds, BlackRock 's actively managed Flexible Income ETF (BINC) seeks to stand out with a multisector approach that balances high quality and high yield. "The way we built this portfolio is marrying high yield, investment-grade credit, agency mortgages and securitized [products]," Rieder said in an interview. Rieder said he's investing more in European high yield these days because of the strong U.S. dollar. "That is really attractive — and European high yield is cheaper than U.S.," he said. In U.S. high yield, single-B-rated debt is the most attractive, the investor said.

Mining operations account for some 4%-7% of global greenhouse gas emissions, according to global consulting firm McKinsey & Company. But some miners are moving to reduce use of fossil fuels in extracting and refining, partly due to pressure from downstream customers that want more sustainable supply chains. Located beside a crystal-blue lake in the lush jungle of Sorowako, South Sulawesi, Vale Indonesia — a subsidiary of Vale international — runs its smelters entirely from hydroelectricity. Other companies and countries around the world also are reducing use of fossil fuels in their mining operations. But now, having that infrastructure means big savings at a time when global energy prices are high.

"The price of global rice prices is particularly worrying," Qingfeng Zhang, a senior director from the Asian Development Bank, told CNBC. Other than India, food inflation has been relatively tame in Asia so far this year. Underscoring how higher food prices erode purchasing power, ADB suggested at that time that a 10% rise in domestic food prices in developing Asia would push 64.4 million into poverty, based on the $1.25-a-day poverty line. Moreover, this spike in rice prices is happening amidst widespread lower food prices. watch nowThis means any spikes in food prices will only translate to food inflation toward the end of this year or early 2024.

Nickel is a central component of the transition away from fossil fuels, making access to Indonesia’s stocks an objective of greatest urgency. “It’s frustrating.”Money and PowerAt 76, Mr. Luhut remains wiry, spry and prone to nationalist pique. He vehemently rejects the notion that Indonesia — a country of nearly 280 million people — must pick a side or imperil its business with the United States. The animosity between the United States and China was not the only issue causing him angst. Since the ban was introduced in 2014, Indonesia’s exports of nickel products have multiplied more than tenfold, exceeding $30 billion last year, according to government data.

On Tuesday, the leaders of eight countries that are home to the Amazon River basin agreed to work together to conserve the world’s largest rainforest at a groundbreaking meeting convened by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of Brazil. The agreement, called the Belém Declaration, for the Brazilian city where the meeting was held, provides a road map to stave off the rampant deforestation, caused in large part by industrial agriculture and land-grabbing, that has severely damaged the rainforest and has major implications for Earth’s climate. The meeting was also expected to yield a separate agreement on Wednesday among other nations with major rainforests — including the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Republic of Congo and Indonesia — to more closely coordinate protecting the ecosystems globally. The Amazon rainforest is not only a haven of biodiversity but also plays an important role in the fight against climate change because it pulls huge amounts of planet-warming carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere and stores it away. Over the past half-century, around 17 percent of the forest has been razed and an even bigger share is severely degraded.

Their data showed mercury contamination from informal gold mining making its way into the biodiversity hotspot's mammals — from rodents to ocelots to titi monkeys. Leaders from the eight countries around the Amazon meeting in Brazil next week will discuss how to end illegal gold mining. While the scientists began testing for mercury at Los Amigos in 2021, some of the samples were gathered as early as 2018. During Reuters' visit to Los Amigos, scientists caught rodents in metal traps baited with peanut butter and snagged birds and a bat in mist nets floating through the forest. In 2021, mining arrived on Los Amigos' doorstep.

UBS is bullish on GoTo Group , and changed its 12-month rating for Indonesian e-commerce and ride-hailing giant from "sell" to "buy." GoTo shares surged as much as 33% during Tuesday trading after the Swiss investment bank did a double upgrade of the stock. Despite subsidy reductions and tough macro conditions, GoTo has been growing quarter-on-quarter in key segments, UBS said in its report. UBS Still, UBS lowered its 12-month price target for GoTo by 33% to 160 rupiah, from a previous target of 240 rupiah. JAKARTA, Indonesia — Indonesia’s Parliament passed a long-awaited and controversial revision of its penal code Tuesday that criminalizes extramarital sex for citizens and visiting foreigners alike. After ratification, the new criminal code must be signed by the president, according to Deputy Minister of Law and Human Rights Edward Hiariej. The criminal code will not apply immediately. Widodo had instructed Law and Human Rights Minister Yasonna Laoly to get input from various communities while lawmakers discussed the articles. “These laws let police extort bribes, let officials jail political foes, for instance, with the blasphemy law,” Harsono said.
Mount Semeru in Lumajang district in East Java province spewed thick columns of ash nearly 5,000 feet into the sky Sunday. Villages and nearby towns were blanketed with falling ash, blocking out the sun, but no casualties have been reported. Hundreds of rescuers were deployed Monday in the worst-hit villages of Sumberwuluh and Supiturang, where houses and mosques were buried to their rooftops by tons of volcanic debris. The government moved about 2,970 houses out of the danger zone, including from Sumberwuluh village. People were advised to keep off the southeastern sector along the Besuk Kobokan River, which is in the path of the lava flow.

Attending a summit meeting in Bali when the missile hit Poland, Biden quickly arranged the meeting with the leaders of France, Germany, Canada and other allies. Most of the leaders in attendance have agreed to sign on, a Biden administration official said. “We, of course, are ready to stand with our NATO allies and partners,” Vedant Patel, a State Department spokesman, told reporters. NATO, and the mutual defense obligation that underlies it, was nearly a casualty of the Trump administration. They’re still looking for him.” Left unsaid was that as president, Trump skipped summit meetings with Asian leaders in 2018, sending Vice President Mike Pence in his place.
Biden and Xi met on the sidelines of the Group of 20 summit in Bali, Indonesia. Both committed Monday to directing their governments’ senior officials to “maintain communication and deepen constructive efforts” on matters including climate change and security of the world food supply, the White House said. “The United States stands ready to do just that — work with you — if that’s what you desire,” Biden told Xi. Kerry and Xie had informal contacts during the two nations’ break on climate cooperation, focused on what would help get the joint dialogue started again. Xi and Biden also agreed to resume the same kind of top-level contacts on other matters critical to global stability, including debt relief, the White House said.
BALI, Indonesia — Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said she expects inflation will recede to normal levels over the next two years, down from near-four-decade highs. Consumer price increases eased to 7.7% last month, in what could be an early sign that inflation is subsiding. On a monthly basis, inflation rose by 0.4%, the same as in September. President Joe Biden at the time lauded the report as “progress” in the effort to wrangle price growth. “It will take time to get inflation back to normal levels — and we could see setbacks along the way — but we will keep at it and help families with the cost of living,” he said.
Vontobel's Ramiz Chelat says that certain emerging markets can weather a global economic slowdown. Chelat is particularly bullish on the economies of India, Indonesia, and Brazil. While domestic investors have their hands full with potential recession, portfolio manager Ramiz Chelat believes that the best investment opportunities may be slipping away. Chelat — who manages $5 billion in emerging market equities and $9 billion in global equities at Vontobel Asset Management — is particularly bullish on the emerging economies of Brazil, India, and Indonesia. Chelat believes that all three nations are strong enough to weather any future fallouts from the Russia-Ukraine war, and may even be net beneficiaries in some cases.
At a news conference following a three-hour meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Biden did not specify how the U.S. might respond to further nuclear tests by North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. “I don’t think there’s any imminent attempt on the part of China to invade Taiwan,” Biden said. Biden walked toward Xi with his right hand outstretched and as they shook, he clasped Xi’s hand with his left. “Good to see you,” said Biden, who met many times with Xi when both were vice presidents of their respective countries. In their most recent phone call in July, both Biden and Xi agreed that they would instruct their aides to explore the possibility of an in-person meeting.
Even so, the White House is downplaying any hope of a major breakthrough when Biden sits down with Xi in person. “I don’t think personal diplomacy will help that much,” said Victor Cha, a former director for Asian affairs in George W. Bush’s White House. The Biden administration sees Xi as the leader of a bullying nation with visions of global dominance. “We recognize that with each launch, [the North Koreans] learn something,” the senior Biden administration official said. But like Biden, Xi will also arrive at the meeting having fortified his position at home.
